Green Wisdom Light Meditation
The Green Wisdom Light Practice is the primary meditation that Rinpoche bestows. It is a meditation specifically intended to teach deep levels of transformative compassion. The Green Wisdom Light meditation is a unique practice that has been adapted from the Tibetan tradition to avoid the misunderstandings Westerners commonly experience when doing visualization practices. People find this meditation to be very powerful because it provides a more direct experience of compassion. It is different from mindfulness meditation practice in that it is an active meditation.
Mindfulness meditation is a passive observation of the mind, and it has an important place in learning what we really think and how our ordinary mind works. By contrast, in active meditation, we practice arising and holding specific virtuous states of mind, such as compassion. Through this practice of arising states of mind intentionally, we gain skill at maintaining virtue and happiness rather than being ‘at the mercy’ of whatever is ‘thrown at us’ in life. Enlightened beings can control their own mind. This only occurs through practice.
Key ingredients of the majority of Tibetan meditations are included in the Green Wisdom Light Meditation:
- Refuge and Bodhichitta vows
- Four Great Wishes – Contemplation on four wishes that transform the heart. Rinpoche has taught on these extensively.
- Seven Limb Prayer – Prepares the mind to be taught through arising the following specific virtuous intentions:
- Prostration
- Making offerings
- Confession
- Rejoicing in virtue
- Requesting the Buddhas to remain
- Requesting the Buddhas to teach dharma
- Dedicating virtue for the enlightenment of all beings
The Green Wisdom Light Set of empowerments, usually given at retreat, includes permission to engage in the following meditation practices:
